A woman takes her chance on an item at the silent auction.

LAUGHLIN — One of the bigger fundraisers for local nonprofit organization, River Fund, Inc., is fast approaching. 

The River Fund Wine-Cheese Charity Auction is slated for Saturday, Nov. 17 from 1 to 4 p.m. PST in the Pavilion Theatre at the Tropicana Laughlin, 2121 S. Casino Drive.

The charity auction was previously a Silver Rider fundraiser but has recently been handed over to the River Fund. Last year the event was held jointly to help with transition.

“You always hope to get bigger,” said Mike Conner, River Fund executive director. “Because our needs have not changed.”

River Fund has various accounts set up to help specific groups or causes such as veterans and cancer patients. The unrestricted fund, whose covers the fundraiser looks to fill, is designed to help in any other ways.

It can mean helping find temporary shelter, getting someone back on their feet, providing deposit money or getting transportation somewhere, said Conner. 

The River Fund also helps people acquire copies of their birth certificate or other similar documents needed for employment, home rental or home purchase.

“This is a marque event for River Fund,” said Conner. “It’s a very important fundraiser that helps us keep helping others.”

The event will include a silent and live auction. Items will include vacation packages, artwork, fine dining, spa services, gift certificates, electronics, a catered dinner by Chef PT Enterprises and a helicopter scenic tour.

Bruce Clark, of TV2, will emcee the event. 

Three cash drawings of $200, $300 and $500 will be awarded.

Conner said River Fund doesn’t have its own track record on this event but if they could bring in about $18,000 to $24,000 they would be happy.

If more money comes in, then River Fund can do that much more, said Conner.

Approximately $30,000 a year is spent from the unrestricted fund, he said. 

It’s difficult to say how much the average assistance is because anywhere between $50 to $500 can be spent per person, he continued.

“I do want to emphasis the money stays local,” said Conner. River Fund spends those dollars to help those in the Laughlin, Bullhead City, Fort Mohave, Topock, Golden Shores and neighboring areas. 

They have helped as far out as Golden Valley and Needles, though most of the time the support is closer to Laughlin and Bullhead.

River Fund is in its ninth year and has provided $2.1 million in assistance to approximately 11,000 households and 135 program grants.

The major sponsors for this event are the BHHS Legacy Foundation, TV2 and the Tropicana Laughlin.

Conner said he can’t thank the Tropicana enough for all of their help and is grateful to the other sponsors for continuing to support the event and stepping up to help.

Donated items for the auction will continue to be accepted until Friday, Nov. 9.

Tickets cost $20 in advance and $25 at the door. Tables of 10 are available for $200. Tickets are available at the River Fund’s Laughlin Office, 55 Civic Way, and at the KLBC-TV2 studio, 3100 Needles Highway.
