LAUGHLIN — With menu items named after 1950s pop music and movie stars, it’s difficult to not take a trip down memory lane at The Hop Cafe Express.

The small 1950s themed food counter at the Laughlin Outlet Mall opened July 1. The restaurant is located on the lower level of the mall in the food court behind the escalator.

Dan Klahn, owner, said he’s always been partial to the 1950s and 60s eras. He likes the movies, the music, the attire, the cars and all that came with that time frame, he continued.

That interest is reflected in the menu. Customers can order items such as The Temptations, a salami and ham sandwich; or The Chubby Checker burger, one of the signature items for the restaurant. There are items such as The Fats Domino, another signature burger; The Wilson Picket or The Little Richard, all burgers.

The burgers are Angus meat, he said. His focus is to ensure the food is higher quality

Klahn said The Fats Domino and The Chubby Checker are signature items and part of what differentiates them from the other menu items is they have cole slaw on the burger instead of lettuce. The Fats Domino also has ham and salami.

“They are a really, really good burger and you won’t find them anywhere else,” Klahn said.

The cafe offers a few specialty items including an Indian taco that features sweet fry bread and The Hop smothered burrito made with shredded rump roast.

The Indian taco was his best seller when he had a restaurant in Billings, Mont., Klahn said. It’s a homemade fry bread with taco meat, cheese and lettuce. The cafe features its own hot sauces — a green and a mild. He was encouraged to bottle the green sauce.

A couple of lighter options are available including the Roy Orbison Veggie Burger and the Hop House Salad.

The Hop Cafe Express is open from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily. It is at 1955 S. Casino Drive and can be reached by phone at 702-299-1515 or faxed at 702-299-1516.

Deliveries are available for those within five miles of the mall. Customers can order through the website at or by downloading the phone application from the Apple Store or Google Play.
