BULLHEAD CITY — It was a family party and a workout in one.

Thursday evening was Family Zumba Night at Desert Valley Elementary School, and faculty, students and family members all got their bodies moving.

Teachers Holly Hamilton and Megan Gibson led the event, one of a monthly series of family nights sponsored by the school’s PTO.

“It’s a family fun night that promotes exercise and fitness,” Hamilton said.

Zumba, created by Colombian dancer and choreographer Alberto Perez in the 1990s, combines dance and aerobics.

Hamilton said it’s easy to pick up.

“It’s definitely a fun, popular thing for adults who don’t want to sign up and take a dance class,” she said. “You don’t have to be a technical dancer to be in it. They’re just fun, easy moves.”

The evening also included snack sales and prize drawings.

Proceeds will go toward PTO.
