Stolen flag replaced

VFW Post 10005 Commander Gerry Hart presents a U.S. flag and a Marine Corps challenge coin to Jan Smith. Smith’s car was burglarized earlier this month, resulting in the loss of several mementos connected to Smith’s late husband, Marine veteran Leonard “Smitty” Smith. Hart said the organization was honored to help Smith find some measure of closure. Smith said the kindness of those at the VFW “filled my heart where there was a hole.” Among the items the thieves took was a burial flag Smith planned to give to her daughter. “My daughter cried when I handed the flag to her,” she said. Smith said Ginger Gates and AMCEO Inc. were among the other organizations who have helped her in the wake of the theft as she tries to get her widow’s benefits from the Veterans Administration.
