BULLHEAD CITY — Mohave Lady T-birds sophomores Oakley Heaton and Maya Radic returned to Bullhead City on Monday night after being eliminated in the first round of the Arizona Interscholastic Association Division II Beach Volleyball pairs.

Arcadia High School Lady Titans senior Helene Hart and freshman Jayden Smith swept the MHS duo 2-0 by scores of 21-19 and 21-15 at Casteel High School in Chandler.

“Being only sophomores, making a team No. 1 at Mohave and qualifying for the state playoffs in individual pairs is a big accomplishment for them,” said T-birds head coach Zdendo Radic by text message. “The match was a close one and a great experience for them.”

Coach Radic said the first set went back and forth and Mohave even led before his T-birds lost it.

“I think after losing close in the (first set) they couldn’t recover quickly enough for set two and were behind in that set for entire time,” said the Mohave head coach. “I think that losing that first set got them down mentally and the other team took advantage of this in the second set.”

Coach Radic said that his pair’s serve was the best part of its game, and its sand coverage was “good” and its “communication needed to be a little better.”

He added: “Oakley and Maya had a great season and with their hard work and commitment, I can see them getting better from here.”
